Nakajima Yasumi II Bronze "Tomoe" Ikebana Vase, Showa Era, 1960's
About the Item
A striking Japanese patinated bronze ikebana flower vase, "Tomoe", by Nakajima Yasumi II (1905 - 1986), Osaka, Japan.
The highly sculptural vase is crafted of bronze with a spectacular variegated red brown patina. A bulbous base sits on a recessed foot. The base is bisected by a deep channel that circumscribes the center of the bulging body. The interior of the base fitted with an integral weight to prevent tipping.
The neck tapers upwards about a quarter of the way up to a thick ringed ridge before reversing direction of the taper and rising up to two more pronounced ridges and ending at a wide trumpet mouth. The ridges evocative of sectioned bamboo.
The underside of the vase with a chiseled signature reading "Yasumi". The vase is accompanied by the original inscribed kiri wood storage box, tomobako. The lid of the tomobako with a six character inscription translated as "Bronze Tomoe Flower Vase". The interior of the lid signed and sealed "Yasumi".
Nakajima Yasumi II (1905 - 1986), born Nakajima Mitsuo, was an influential and celebrated metal artist working out of Osaka. The second generation artist took his father's name and continued the family tradition of working in bronze. He was known for playing with forms, and further developed the strikingly colored "seido" bronze the family was known for.
