About the Item

A pair of well cast and dramatic Japanese parcel gilt bronze dragon vases, Edo period, early 19th century. The heavy bronze vases of pear shape, each with a single writhing dragon cast in high relief dancing in the clouds. Under the dragons, swallows dart in and out of the crashing waves. The fierce dragons face each other, one with its mouth open, the other with its mouth close, in reference to the Japanese Buddhist concept of A-un, symbolizing the beginning and the end, and encompassing everything in between, akin to the Greek concept of Alpha-Omega. The bronze of deep chocolate color with a rich patina with areas of bright parcel gilding.
