Tribal Art, Granary Wooden Door of the Naga Culture

About the Item

This exceptional piece is one of the few impressively carved granary doors which have survived to our days. Created in the village of Wakching, in the Indian state of Nagaland, it evinces two central cylinders at each wing through which two tapering sticks are thrust to keep the door shut. As can be appreciated, the ornamentation consists in horn-like designs in low relief which stem from the cylinders, creating an impression of a double pair of mithun horns, a bovine species endemic to Northeast India and one of the most important among their beliefs. The massive cylinders seem to form the bull's head. The Nagas are recognized for their unerring instinct for color and design. A remarkable example of this could be the finely incised lozenge-pattern bands which run along the centre and edges of this door.
