Chinese Jade Stone Ritual Blade

About the Item

Based on forms that emerged during the Shang Dynasty (1600-1027 BC), this jade stone ceremonial blade continues upon this tradition with precision. The Shang dynasty placed great emphasis on the administration of power through ceremonies that utilized ritual jade blades, among other jade tools, in rites as auspicious ceremonial objects. Known as yùguī (玉圭), these neolithic jade blades, or tablets, over time evolved from functional weapons to symbolic artifacts, embellished with figural carvings or inscribed text. This contemporary example follows the traditional oblong form of its predecessors and was hand-carved from a variegated jade hardstone with mottled shades of green, umber and black. One side of the blade is decorated with vertical fluting and the other with abstract carvings in low relief. The blade has been elevated on a custom steel mount for display as a petite sculpture.
