Japanese antique stone Buddha "Jizo" seated statue/1700-1850/Edo period/Garden

About the Item

I would like to introduce you to a wonderful stone Buddha made during the Edo period in Japan. This is a stone Buddha made from the middle to late Edo period (around 1700 to 1850). The name is Jizo Bodhisattva. Jizo is one of the Bodhisattvas in the world of Buddhism. It is a being who saves people in the world with an infinitely merciful heart. Its appearance is similar to that of a monk. Jizo has no hair on his head and wears a kesa (long robe). He holds a staff in his right hand and a jewel in his left. This has all the requirements of Jizo Bodhisattva. Although he is sometimes seen standing, this stone Buddha is seated in a lotus position. It's a beautiful figure. Because it is a sandstone stone, its surface has been worn down by the wind and rain over many years, resulting in its appearance like this. However, its appearance is rather abstract and very cool. Stone Buddhas from the Edo period were often carved from a single stone with a halo, but this one does not have a halo and has a simple appearance. It looks very familiar when placed in the garden. It is also possible that another stone Buddha was originally placed on the lotus seat. However, I don't know when this pedestal and this Jizo Bodhisattva came together, but they are in harmony and there is no sense of discomfort. There are some scratch marks on the back of the lotus seat. But it won't affect the appearance much. Stone Buddhas that look like this are very rare, and I was lucky enough to get one this time. This is a highly recommended stone Buddha. Weight of Jizo body: 25.65kg Weight of pedestal: 23.2kg [We mainly sell old Japanese items. We've seen tens of thousands of items so far. • Chinese Stone Seated Shakyamuni Buddha Stele, c. 1850
    Located in Chicago, IL
This carved stone stele depicts the historical Buddha, known also as Shaka, Shakyamuni, or Siddhartha Gautama. Seated in perpetual meditation, the Buddha embodies virtues of wisdom and composure. Hand-carved of limestone in the style of Northern Wei (386-535) statuary, the Buddha is depicted upon a lotus plinth with legs crossed in lotus position. His hands are held downwards in bhumisparsha mudra, a gesture representing the moment that the Buddha claimed the earth as witness to his awakening. The Buddha has a peaceful, benevolent expression and is framed by a halo of concentric circles. His figure is surrounded by attendant bodhisattvas, carved in relief on the curved stele behind and platform below. Leafy tree branches add a naturalistic touch to the background, wrapping around to the back of the stele to form a canopy above a second, smaller Buddha...
