Japanese Antique Stone Fudo Myoo Buddha- Hard To Find

About the Item

An excellent garden or indoor sculptural choice. An old circa early 20th century Japanese stone Buddha of Fudo Myoo. A charming stone Buddha with a solemn but cheerful face that possesses folk-art elements of a roadside deity, in contrast to the stern appearance of most Fudō Myōō statues found in temples. This is an old Japanese stone Buddha made in the Taisho period. Fudo Myo-o is a Buddhist statue that has been popular in Japan since ancient times, and is said to be the ``guardian deity of warding off epidemics'' and has the power to guide all people and exorcise all disasters. Fudo Myo-o means “the immovable or unshakable one.” He is one of five myo-o, or lords of light, whose threatening appearance guards the Law of Buddhism. He is equipped to guide the spiritual traveler past temptation on the path to enlightenment. This Fudo Myoo is characterized by a stern though charming expression - an expression that is not commonly seen , and in his right hand he holds a sword that cuts off all doubts in the mind. In his left hand, he holds a rope called ken-saku, which he uses to guide things in the right direction. He is depicted standing or sitting on a rock. Furthermore, he carries a flame that burns down all obstacles. Dimensions: 12 inches tall. and 5 inches wide, 15 pounds. Extraordinary work of art. Beautiful natural wear with encrustations and dark patina from appropriate age. Hand made, hand carved. Only one.
