Thai Cast Silver Alloy Standing Buddha, Mid 20th Century, Thailand
About the Item
An impressive and gracious Thai cast silver alloy standing Buddha, mid 20th century, Thailand.
The Buddha stands upright upon a small square plinth. He is dressed in layered robes, including a dhoti covering his legs, and a sanghati wrapped around his torso, covering both shoulders and arms, and flaring elegantly behind him. The dhoti features wonderful geometric designs to the central hem.
The Buddha performs abhaya mudra, the gesture of reassurance and dispelling fear. He holds one arm out, bent at the elbow, palm facing outwards. His other arm held loosely at his side, also with the palm facing outwards. Both hands feature a floral mark to the center of the palm.
His broad face is set with soft features, including heavily lidded downcast eyes, a flat nose, and wide mouth with plump limps set in a soft smile. Narrow ears with long earlobes frame his face. His hair arranged in neat rows of tight curls, covering the pronounced ushnisha to the top of his head.
The heavy Buddha cast from a low grade (?) silver alloy. The silver with some pitting and heavy tarnish to the recessed areas.
