Historic Revolutionary War Period Bed Warming Pan

About the Item

An important and historic revolutionary war period bed warming pan, belonging to Lieutenant James Porter, Jr., circa 1770s-1780s. A hand chased brass warming pan having a hinged lid with central sunburst surrounded by Rococo scrolls and heart-shaped blossoms, fastened with original copper rivets, mounted on original turned and scribed wooden handle. This pan was the property of American Lieutenant James Porter, Jr. who was born in 1728 in Sullivan County, New Hampshire. He fought at with General Stark and his Minutemen at Bunker Hill, over-wintered with Washington at Valley Forge, and was captured by the British. This pan has descended within the family. Family legend has it that Porter had this pan with him at the encampment in Valley Forge. The piece is in overall very good condition, with only a tear hidden beneath one rivet in the hinge which does not affect the appearance or structural stability of the piece. Measures: 43-3/4 in long x 11-1/2 in diameter x 3-1/2 in thick.
