A large and Ornate 19th Century Victorian Scottish Cast Iron Fireplace Insert.

About the Item

A large and highly ornate, Scottish, probably Carron of Falkirk -cast iron and brass fireplace insert. A large outer plate with an attached polished steel raised border surmounted with polished brass reeding on all three sides , a pair of polished brass bullseye capitols to each corner. The central, highly decorative splayed chimney hood with a high relief bird to the framed and bordered panel. Flanked by a pair of angled, highly decorative side panels with urns and high relief masks-the young boy thought to be Genymede to the left, and Zeus to the right, however, this is conjecture. The splayed fire bars surmounted by brass finials, and an ash pan door with brass pull knob below. We have painted the whole with black fire paint then graphite paste. The raised steel border, and brass is polished. Scotland 1850c Internal fire opening size: 455mm wide x 690mm high. Ganymede was an oxherd from the city of Troy and, although none of the sources mentions his age, we are consistently told that he was beautiful and young. His beauty apparently was so great, so “godlike” (in Greek, antitheos) as Homer and Hesiod put it, that even the gods themselves could not resist him. “Zeus carried off golden-haired Ganymedes because of his beauty, to be among the Deathless Ones and pour drink for the gods in the house of Zeus, a wonder to see, honoured by all the immortals as he draws the red nectar from the golden bowl.”
