Small Japanese Imari Bowl Meiji Period Circa 1880

About the Item

This delicate Japanese bowl was handpainted during the Meiji Period, circa 1880. The traditional octagonal shape is decorated with eight panels in the Imari style. We see panels in iron red with a gold and blue wave pattern in the center. These alternate with white panels displaying plum trees, pine trees, bamboo trees, or peonies growing from rockwork. The bowl is a small gem! DIMENSIONS: 2.7" x 6.5" CONDITION: Excellent PRICE: $600 Background of the Japanese decoration on this bowl. The wave pattern, or the "blue ocean wave," carries significant symbolic meanings. It symbolizes good luck, peace, and tranquility, reflecting a desire for a calm and enduring life, much like the endless waves of the ocean. The pine tree symbolizes longevity, steadfastness, and tenacity. Bamboo is celebrated for its flexibility and resilience. The plumb blossom is particularly revered because it blooms in winter, showing strength and perseverance to bloom amidst hardship. Peonies are commonly associated with wealth and prosperity due to their full and rounded blooms.
