Antique Carnelian and Yellow Gold Vinaigrette
About the Item
An exceptional, fine and impressive antique 1820s 12k yellow gold and carnelian vinaigrette; an addition to our collection of silver boxes and cases.
This exceptional, fine and impressive antique 12k yellow gold vinaigrette has a cylindrical form.
The surface of the sides, base and cover of this impressive antique vinaigrette are encompassed with concentric bands of tooled decoration, accented with punched circular motifs.
The underside of the antique box features an impressive chased tiered floral motif, accented with further tooled decoration.
The upper plateau of the cover is ornamented with an impressive collet set carnelian panel to the centre.
The hinged cover opens to allow access to the original, hinged pierced decorated grille.
Condition
This 19th century antique gold vinaigrette is an exceptional gauge of gold, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. There are no hallmarks as to be expected with such a piece; the date and origin can be determined by the composition and decoration.

This exceptional antique silver vinaigrette has a rectangular form with rounded corners. The cover of this fine vinaigrette is embellished with a scene of Abbotsford House in high relief. The sides of the box are encompassed with bands of chased scrolling leaf ornamenation. The underside of the box is ornamented with engine turned decoration incorporating a plain rectangular vacant cartouche. Both the base and cover are embellished with applied scrolling leaf decorated borders. The hinged silver vinaigrette cover allows access to the original hallmarked hinged, pierced decorated silver gilt grille. The vinaigrette retains the original gilding; this has worn with age in a sympathetic fashion to an aesthetically pleasing mellow color. This exceptional vinaigrette was crafted by the renowned silversmith Nathaniel Mills. A historical country house which was the former residence of renowned novelist and poet Sir Walter Scott, situated in the Scottish Borders.
