About the Item

Beautifully detailed with symbols of the arts, including literature, sculpture, pottery and spinning, this silvered bronze casket with hinged lid and mahogany interior was produced by the famed Oscar Bach studios in New York City. In addition to a series of medallions illustrating the arts, the box is rich with medieval and Renaissance motifs, with a rich, deep red ground behind the pierced metalwork. Bach's caskets, often with a Zodiac theme, are usually smaller, this larger size and "arts" theme is highly unusual. Bach who was, along with Samuel Yellin, one of America's premier metalworkers in the 1920s and 1930s. He also crafted a line of very Fine tabletop decorative items such as this piece, usually composed of bronze or silvered metal.
