Norwegian Baroque Box, Carved Mythical Creatures + Figurative Scenes, Circa 1740

About the Item

Very special Baroque box with carved decorations of mythical creatures and figurative scenes Carved monogrammed initials "HPP" + Family Crest, origin: Gudbrandsdal, Norway, circa 1740 Very similar carving to the travel box from Gudbrandsdal, dated to 1700, Kunstindustrimuseet, Oslo The years between 1740 and 1780 are the greatest significance in Gudbrandsdal carving for it was during this time that the renowned døleskurd was developed. By 1700 the vine becomes thick and ribbon-like with simple, slightly curled leaved intertwining in medieval fashion. The leaves are more and more scrolled, more like the acanthus, culminating in the rich baroque type of carving, the døleskurd. Gudbrandsdal was a well-to-do district, homes large and well-furnished. Even the smaller objects, things such as the mangletrœr and œsker were often decorated with lavish carving characteristics of the district.
