Round Woven Chinese Box, c. 1850

About the Item

With interlaced reeds that shimmer in the light, this 19th-century Chinese box celebrates the beautiful simplicity of a hand-woven object. The lidded box is crafted of densely woven bamboo and reeds to a rounded form embellished with raised banding and a low footed base. The lid lifts open to reveal a spacious interior, ideal as a serving vessel or a place to stow household clutter. Finished by a layer of burgundy lacquer for a watertight seal, the bamboo weave has aged beautifully with time, burnished to a light brown color with a glossy patina that catches the light.
