English George III Japanned Tall Longcase Clock, Daniel Keele, circa 1770
By Daniel Keele
Located in Shippensburg, PA
A very fine George III period black lacquer japanned longcase clock with a movement by Daniel Keele of Salisbury, it is a very fine presentation piece. The pagoda top is crested by three swollen bulb gilded finials, the domed door of the hood opening as a full unit including both flanking pillars to give access to the dial. In the arch of the face, a rocking ship is recessed within a silvered circular ring engraved The Salisbury, this surrounded by applied gilt Rococo foliage that follows through in the spandrels surrounding the dial below. Pierced hour and minute hands rotate from a matted gilt center below an applied silvered nameplate engraved Dan Keele SARUM below a circular seconds dial, all enclosed within a Roman numeral chapter ring. The black lacquer ground of the body is finely polychromed with oriental figural scenes and gardens outlined in gilt framed panels throughout. It remains exceptional presentation piece. Daniel Keele is discussed in Clocks & Clockmakers of Salisbury (Michael Snell, 1986) as being a somewhat exceptional clock maker, primarily due to the number of Act of Parliament clocks...
