Rare Important French Louis XIV Style Gilt-Bronze Mounted Boulle Marquetry Clock

About the Item

A rare and important French Louis XIV style gilt bronze mounted green boulle marquetry clock, Regulateur De Parquet, with matching original pedestal, circa 1890s. After the Model by Jean-Pierre Latz. This fabulous clock and its matching pedestal are masterfully crafted of ebony and made with most spectacular polychrome Boulle marquetry comprising mother of pearl inlaid into golden brass. Having beautiful gilt bronze mounts of putti surmounting the clock case, with boulle semi-precious stones, mother-of pearl, and brass inlay on an ebony lacquered wood ground, centering a glazed door revealing a circular gilt metal dial with enameled Roman and Arabic numerals. The whole surmounting a Rococo style gilt bronze and boulle inlaid pedestal, centering an inlaid musical trophy. Dimensions: 85" high x 21" wide x 17.5" deep. The quality and details of this timepiece are very similar to the Latz clock held in the former residence of King Augustus III in Schloss Moritzburg. Considered among the premier ébénistes of the 18th century, Latz counted numerous members of royalty throughout Europe as patrons. His incredible creations can be found in world’s most prestigious museums and collections, including the J. Paul Getty, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the British Royal Collection Trust and the Staaliche Kunstammlungen Museums in Germany.

Jean-François Deninger, called Denière, was one of the most illustrious bronziers of the first half of the 19th century. Appointed Envoy in Constantinople around 1796, the bronzier Denière entered into partnership with François Mathelin in 1797. They founded a prosperous operation and their atelier had over 200 workers during the Empire period - a number that subsequently doubled during the reign of Louis-Philippe. Fournisseur to the duchesse de Berry and Louis-Philippe, Denière also worked for the duke of Hamilton, Ferdinand VII of Spain, William II of Hesse, William II of Holland, Tsar Alexander II of Russia, and other heads of state. In 1817-1818 Denière furnished some of the bronze work for the redecoration of the White House in Washington.     This Boulle wall clock is comprised of two components: the clock body and the bracket upon which the clock body sits. The wooden clock case is violin shaped and, where not decorated with brass inlayed with tortoiseshell, this wood has been ebonised. The edges of the clock case are mounted with gilt bronze friezes and other gilt bronze motifs, such as foliage forms and Classical masks. Most distinctively, the front of the clock case, as well as the interior visible through the open front, is decorated with brass inlayed with tortoiseshell.
