Exceptional Surinam-Themed Amsterdam Long-Case Clock
Located in Amsterdam, NL
A Surinam-themed Amsterdam long-case clock The Netherlands, 1746-1756, dial signed Nicolaas Weylandt/Amsterdam The case of the clock is made of Rio palisander veneer and snakewood, with the arch showing a painted scene of the harbour of Paramaribo, Fort Zeelandia and Dutch ships in anchorage, the spandrels decorated with figural representations of the four continents, the centre of the dial painted with Mercury, the god of trade, seated on a bale signed VCS (Vereenigde Compagnie Suriname), and one of the barrels bearing the initials “RBS,” on the left the river god of the Surinam river, with a Dutch three-master in the background. Measures: H 259 x W 60 x D 35 cm (case) Diameter 32 cm (clock dial) This exceptionally rare long-case clock probably was ordered by one of the many wealthy families living along the Amsterdam canals that owned or had shares in plantations in Surinam. It’s a successful marriage of the work of an accomplished 18th century Amsterdam clockmaker, a Dutch cabinetmaker working with exotic tropical timbers, a woodcarver familiar with both Dutch Rococo design and Surinamese iconography, and a painter with knowledge, whether first- hand or through other visualisations, of the Paramaribo waterfront. In the production of this Gesamtkunstwerk, only the name of the clockmaker is known: Nicloaas Weylandt (circa 1700-1754), who had a business situated on the Nieuwendijk near the Haarlemmersluis in Amsterdam from 1742 until his death. The case is made of imported timbers from Surinam; Rio-palisander and snakewood. A very similar clock-case, veneered in walnut, is illustrated in J. Zeeman, De Nederlandse staande klok...

19th Century Antique Regency Mahogany Longcase Clock by John Barwise of London
Located in Devon, GB
A fine Regency longcase clock in the form of a domestic regulator in an architectural mahogany case with inset panels of satinwood and ebonized mouldings. The case of this clock shows the distinct influence of Thomas Hope, the eminent antiquarian and designer who was inspired by the Greek and Egyptian designs. The 12in square brass dial has a silvered finish and is engraved with Roman chapters and subsidiary second’s dial. The dial is signed within the lower section 'Barwise, London'. The eight day duration movement is of the highest quality, with five pillars, dead beat escapement, maintaining power and hour strike on a bell. The pendulum has a wood rod for temperature compensation with beat adjustment and rating nut beneath the brass bob. The clock is complete with the original brass cased weights. John Barwise was an eminent maker working in London from 1790. He was chairman of the British Watch...

18th Century Dutch Automaton Longcase Clock
By Jan Henkels
Located in New Orleans, LA
An exceptional example of 18th century Dutch clockmaking, this marvellous longcase clock was crafted by Jan Henkels of Amsterdam (c.1722-1778), one of the most respected of the great Dutch clockmakers. The late Baroque-style case is exemplary of those clocks commissioned specifically by the wealthy, featuring lush timbers and ingenious mechanical features that were utilized for only the most important timepieces of this period. This particular clock is set apart by the inclusion of an exceptionally rare and elaborate “scheepjes mechaniek”, or automaton ship mechanism. The automaton brings to life the Greek mythological tale of Perseus’ rescue of the princess Andromeda from the fury of Poseidon. The god had sent the sea monster Cetus to kill the helpless princess. Perseus is seen slaying the fire-breathing creature, as the mechanism allows the hero’s head to turn. Above, the hero’s steed, the winged Pegasus, flies back and forth surveying the scene, while Dutch sailing ships watch the spectacle while rocking with the tumultuous waves. The 8-day movement within is a brass-plated anchor escapement with a pendulum that also operates the ship automaton. The striking train mechanism features Dutch striking (the hours and half hours are rung on low- and high-pitched bells, respectably) and quarter-hour striking on two additional bells. The movement is distinguished by the very rare addition of an alarm, which can be set with the desired time. The going, alarm and striking trains are weight driven. The clock’s face is technically advanced for the period, featuring indicators for the hours, minutes, seconds, month, day, date, and moon phase. The triangular-shaped apertures, which in this case are used for the calendar information and alarm setting, are characteristic of fine Dutch clocks of this time and are an important feature that helps to date the timepiece. The majestic clock case is crafted of oak veneered in walnut with elegant citron wood inlays. The beautifully-formed pendulum door features a cast brass ornament of Chronos, while the figures of Atlas and a pair of trumpeting angels stand atop. Adding an air of elegance to the case is its bombé formed base, which became a distinguishing feature of mid-18th century Dutch longcase clocks...

English Georgian Mahogany Antique Tall Case Clock Tribute to Admiral Nelson
Located in Shippensburg, PA
An intricately detailed work, this fine English Georgian tall case clock crafted during the first years of the 19th Century is distinguished by it's extensive satinwood stringer inlays - a work strongly influenced by the Neoclassicism of the period, the piece features unusually bold Corinthian columns flanking the shaft and in pairs flanking the glazed door. Both of the oversized columns flanking the shaft are inlaid between each flute, a detail requiring inordinate skill and precision. The boxed tympanum hosting the broken arch pediment is substantial, three ball-and-spire brass finials set along the corners and center over the tapering inlaid plinth and arched glazed door. This opens on original hinges to reveal a most precisely enameled dial with a moon-phase dial painted with a British warship on smooth...
