English Blond Tortoiseshell Mantel Clock
About the Item
A very fine quality English blond tortoiseshell dome topped mantel clock of the Edwardian period. Ivory Stringing to front. Set upon four bun feet the clock has a stepped base and is of domed form. The tortoiseshell veneers which have been applied to all visible sides of the clock including the back are of a beautifully figured blond colour. The clear white enamel dial is set under convex glass within a brass bezel. The dial has both Roman and Arabic numerals and blued steel hands. The eight day movement is behind a glazed and hinged bezel and is wound and the hands set from behind. This gives a dial uninterrupted by winding holes. The movement is French and the timekeeping is controlled by the original cylinder escapement, stamped with the lion. This is the symbol of a fine and prolific French carriage clock maker by the name of Albert Villon of Saint Nicholas, France, who established his shop in 1867 and who supplied the movement.
