French Louis XV Style 19th Century Gilt-Bronze Cherub & Maiden Mantel Clock

About the Item

An Important and Palatial French Louis XV Style 19th century Gilt-Bronze Cherub and Maiden Mantel Clock "In Search of Love", the movement by "Samuel Marti et Cie." The large and impressive two-tone satin and mercury gilt figural clock with finely chased gilt-bronze (Ormolu) figures of a cupid (cherub) holding a floral wreath and peeking from behind the clock case onto a young scantily-clad maiden or bather, the top crowned with a plying Putto and all surmounted with scrolls, flowers and acanthus decorations. The circular white enameled dial with Roman and Arabic numerals. The bell striking movement stamped: "Marti et Cie. Medaille D' Argent 1889 - 108-10-4" and "L.R. BREVETÉ S.G.D.G.". circa: Paris, 1889-1890. The firm of Samuel Marti et Cie.(1870–1890) was a renowned French clockmaker based in Paris during the second half of the 1800s. Samuel Marti established his business in 1841 in Montbéliard, in Doubs, a department in northeast France that was the birthplace of many of the most prestigious clockmakers. Marti exhibited his clocks regularly at expositions in Paris, where he won a Mention of Honour in 1839, a Bronze Medal in 1860, a Silver Medal in 1889, and several Gold Medals (1841, 1851, 1852, 1900). Marti collaborated with another two celebrated French clockmakers: Roux and Japy Frères. Breveté (or Brevete without the accent as most sellers write it) means patented in French and most clocks produced between about 1850 and 1950 have that word stamped on the back. It is the legal registration of some element of the clock or all of it. Along with breveté, S.G.D.G. is usually also stamped on the back case of a French clock produced during that period. S.G.D.G. is not a brand, it means 'Without any guarantee from the Government' (Sans Garantie Du Governement) and it was required by French law to be stamped on all objects with a legal patent from 1844 until 1968, especially those manufactured for export. Some French manufacturers produced clocks for high-end jewellers (such as Tiffany's, Mappin Webb and private names) without stamping their own brand name on them, however they did have to stamp "Breveté" and S.G.D.G. somewhere on the movement and usually on the back case. Height: 29 1/8 inches (74 cm) Width: 23 inches (58.4 cm) Depth: 11 1/2 inches (29.2 cm).
