Antique Acme 5" Forged Adjustable Spanner Wrench with Twisted Handle
About the Item
Antique Acme 5-inch Forged Adjustable Spanner Wrench featuring a Twisted Handle, patented by Frederick Seymour under Patent number 27.83.
The handle is constructed from a wire or rod bent to create two parallel rods. One of these rods is threaded to accommodate an adjusting nut, allowing the adjustable jaw to slide along it. These wrenches were produced in sizes ranging from 4 inches to 21 inches, available in various finishes, and offered with or without the twist handle. In 1893, Whitman & Barnes took over the ACME wrench line from Capitol Mfg., and by 1915, Whitman & Barnes, the last of the four manufacturers, had ceased production of the ACME wrench.
This patent also served as the foundation for subsequent patents, such as no. 447,665, which combined pipe and nut wrench functionalities. Patent no. 460,539 further improved upon this design.
An early version of this combination wrench was known as HOLLAND'S ACME.
