Giant Whelk Conch Sea Shell Living Sculpture & Air Plant on Spalted Maple Base

About the Item

This incredible "living sculpture" was handcrafted by contemporary sculptor, Jackie W. The found giant whelk shell plays host to an arrangement of purple and green moss. Look closely to see some Spanish moss at the bottom. A single starburst shaped air plant emerges from the heart of the moss. The plant is alive, reclaiming the shell as it's home. The living sculpture exhibits the tenacious ability for life to find a way to thrive, even in the most unlikely circumstances. This snail shell once roamed the ocean floor, now it has become a sort of terrestrial reef. Jackie W. is a classically trained artist hailing from New York. Recent sculptural work has centered on the mystery of life, and it's genesis. The artist concedes that the secrets of life may forever remain enigmatic. However, her work draws us closer into our relationship with our own vital essence and that of the world around us. This piece was created in spring of 2021. The air plant in this living sculpture is... the owner must water the air plant. *** This piece may look different when it arrives to you because the plant is living and evolving with time*** This piece was handcrafted from a giant whelk shell sourced from Florida's Gulf Coast, steel rods and spalted maple. The shell shows signs of organic wear. The lines and pitting you see on it's surface was actually caused by smaller sea snails feeding on the discarded whelk shell. The artist specifically chooses battered shells like this to illustrate the symbiotic dynamic between creatures, their neighbors, and the environment. Marbling within the spalted maple is caused by a bacterial infestation in the wood. A seemingly destructive infection has, in turn, become a thing of beauty. • Chrysalis White Alabaster Ebony Soapstone UV Lighted Metaphysical Sculpture
    Located in Chattanooga, TN
"Chrysalis" is based on the shape of a tulip bud and handcrafted from white alabaster, ebony soapstone and green fluorite. One might also interpret the bud as a shell or cocoon. This shape represents a vessel for life, an opportunity for rebirth and transformation. A chrysalis is the pupal stage from which a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly. The base of the bud holds a special secret, a single UV LED diode an ethereal glow, activating the stone and acting as a beacon to draw the viewer in a sacred, transformative, space. Day and night. Duality exists within us all. “Chrysalis” is a sculpture and a healer. In its dormant (unlit) state, the white alabaster cleanses its surroundings, draws spirit to you and evokes forgiveness. This can be internal or external forgiveness. The green fluorite stone at center neutralizes negative energy. Press the switch to initiate the UV light. Like a moth to a flame. The light magnifies the stones power. "Chrysalis" was created by multi-disciplinary artist, Jackie W. Hailing from New York, the classically trained artist explores themes around the genesis of life and our connection to nature and one another. Recent work has focused on sculpture in steel, stone, and found materials natural materials. This sculpture is battery powered and operates on a switch. Measures: 5" wide x 4.75" deep x 10" high Condition: New, created 2021. The black soapstone...
