Usha Seejarim - Lobe
About the Item
Usha Seejarim works with mundane, everyday objects that resonate with daily household rituals and women’s labour globally, reinterpreting these into sculptural forms. Clothing pegs and other domestic objects such as brooms, serving trays, and irons are materials used by Seejarim in their multitude, to become physical manifestations of third wave feminism’s shift away from the politics of the individual and towards the collective and community. In Lobe, wooden pegs are moulded to create a skin-like, textured quality. While the pegs are rigid, once joined together and manipulated, they create curvilinear organic forms. Seejarim speaks of softening the rigidity of the peg by transforming it into something sensual. Lobe is suggestive of a bodily part; something dangly that is attached to a bigger structure. Or the part of the brain that controls different functions. Like many Pop artists before who sought to place daily items in the realm of art, Seejarim’s interest lies more in forcing us to interrogate not only our everyday use and consumption, but also their implied gender association. Repetitive gestures such as the layering of pegs highlight themes of human labour, alienation and gender invisibility. Her work aims to subvert the structures inherent in our culture that render women as powerless subjects.
