French Female bust”, terracotta, Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, Neoclassical
About the Item
One of a kind female bust in terracotta, signed A. Carrier on the back. Seated on a wooden base we find this delicate bust of a young woman, with sweet and delicate features. With her face turned to one side of her, the softness of her complexion stands out in contrast to the work on her hair, which ends in a flower headdress, the artist's hallmark. Likewise, the memory of the “wet cloth” technique in the woman's clothing stands out, which seems to adhere to her body, creating delicate folds, full of movement and realism.
The woman was the preferred subject in the small-format sculptural works of Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, in which he tried to capture the academic ideal of beauty, combining in his technique audacity, delicacy and the expression of a feeling that has earned him comparisons with Claude Michel “Clodion”.
Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824 – 1887)
Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleus was a prestigious French sculptor and painter. In 1840 he entered the School of Fine Arts in Paris, where he was a student of David d'Angers. Ten years later he moved to London, where he was working for Minton China Works for another five years. Upon his return to France he began to make and exhibit his most relevant works and obtained the patronage of Napoleon III, who commissioned him to carry out several monumental bronze sculptures. In 1876 he was appointed art director of the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres, where he incorporated several of his own models.
He had a great admiration for the sculptors of the late French Baroque, so authors such as Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, Agustín Pajou, Jean-Antoine Houdon and Claude Michel “Clodion” were his main source of inspiration. Auguste Rodin worked as a marble worker in his workshop in the 1860s. Later, he made a bust of his teacher and companion.

Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse
Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse was a French sculptor. Carrier-Belleuse was born on 12th June 1824 at Anizy-le-Château, Aisne, France. He began his training as a goldsmith's apprentice. He was a student of David d'Angers and briefly studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. His career is distinguished by his versatility and his work outside France, in England between 1850–55 and in Brussels around 1871. His name is perhaps best known because Auguste Rodin worked as his assistant between 1864 and 1870. The two traveled to Brussels in 1871 and by some accounts, Rodin assisted Carrier-Belleuse's architectural sculpture for the Brussels Stock Exchange.
