Spain, Late 17th Century
Francisco Ruiz Gijón (Spanish, 1653 - 1720) was a renowned Spanish sculptor of the Baroque period. Born in Utrera, he became known, lived and created his remarkable sculptures in Seville. He belongs to the Andalusian school, following the style of Pedro Roldan. Gijon studied with sculptor Andrés Cansino and developed his artistic career in Seville. His works are exclusively religious. Francisco Ruiz Gijón worked for several Catholic churches and brotherhoods. His most important creations are related to the Holly Week processions in Seville.
Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone (c. 1181 – 3 October 1226), known as Saint Francis of Assisi, was an Italian mystic and Catholic friar who founded the religious order of the Franciscans. He was inspired to lead a Christian life of poverty as a beggar and itinerant preacher. One of the most venerated figures in Christianity, Francis was canonized by Pope Gregory on 16 July 1228. He is commonly portrayed wearing a brown habit with a rope tied around his waist, featuring three knots that symbolize the three Franciscan vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience.
In 1219, he went to Egypt in an attempt to convert the sultan al-Kamil and put an end to the conflict of the Fifth Crusade. In 1223, he arranged for the first live nativity scene as part of the annual Christmas celebration in Greccio. According to Christian tradition, in 1224 Francis received the stigmata during the apparition of a Sephardic angel angel in a religious ecstasy.
He founded the men's Order of Friars Minor, the women's Oreder of St. Claire, the Third Order of St. Francis and the Custody of the Holy Land. Once his community was authorized by Pope Innocecent III, he withdrew increasingly from external affairs.
St. Francis is associated with patronage of animals and the environment. It became customary for churches to hold ceremonies blessing animals on his feast day on the fourth of October. He is known for devotion to the Eucharist. Along with Catherine o Siena, he was designated patron saint of Italy. The city of San Francisco in California, United States, is named after him.

- Russian Silver Troika Sculpture, I. Sazikov after E. Lanceray, Moscow, ca. 1875By Ignaty SazikovLocated in New York, NYThe sculpture depicts an elderly peasant, standing to his full height with reins in his hands; behind him in a sleigh are his son and grandson, who drives the horses with a whip. Dressed in typical peasant clothes, all three have very expressive faces. The entire composition of this outstanding silver sculpture, including the original marble base are executed with such high skill that one could imagine the steam pouring out of the horses’ nostrils in the frosty air; and hear the sound of crisp snow under their hooves. The troika gallops at full speed, leaving behind clear traces of horseshoes on the virgin snow. Notes: There are intact little bell on the yoke of a central horse, and an original detachable hallmarked whip. The original, intricately executed marble base is an integral part of the whole composition. The sculpture was never cleaned or polished, and has an original patina. Markings: Fully hallmarked with maker's marks IS (for Ignaty Sazikov...Category
