Benin Bronze Bell Sculpture Depicting an Oba
About the Item
An exquisite Benin bronze sculpture in shape of a bell depicting an Oba. Oba translates to "ruler" in the Yoruba and Bini languages of contemporary West Africa. The Kingdom of Benin Empire was a pre-colonial African state in what is now modern Nigeria. Benin bronze sculptures are constructed by using the lost-wax technique.
The Oba is depicted in royal regalia, a colonial hat and layers of beaded coral necklaces. He is holding a small stool that could also be utilized b as a neck rest. He is standing on a bell-shaped platform. Two abstract leopards are depicted on the left and right corners of the bell. The leopard was the animal in which the Oba was most strongly associated with. The leopard is king of the forest, just as the Oba of Benin is king of the city and villages where his people live.
