Bronze statue of a nymph with Borghese shell with founder signature Barbedienne

About the Item

This bronze sculpture representing a nymph with the Borghese shell of the 19th century and was made after the sculptor Antoine Coysevox (1640-1720). The nymph with the Borghese shell was one of the sculptures present in the garden of Versailles on the parterre of Latone, now present in the Louvres. The sculpture bears the signature of the founder Barbedienne. Bronze with brown patina. This bronze statue is present in the museum of Reims. Dimension: Height: 13cm (5'') Width: 13cm x 11cm (5'' x 4,3'') The Maison Barbedienne is a famous foundry of the 19th century, which quickly became famous for its editions of statues and art objects. A bronze workshop, the company does however work with other craft bodies, and associates its name with works of great diversity, especially in furniture. Present at all the Universal Exhibitions of its time, the Maison Barbedienne was regularly distinguished by awards, notably at the Universal Exhibition of 1855 where it received the Great Medal of Honour.
A Parisian bronzer and publisher, Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892) founded a company in 1839 in collaboration with Achille Collas, inventor of the process for the mathematical reduction of sculpture. Thanks to this revolutionary process, they open the doors to unprecedented production. Under the name «Collas et Barbedienne», they specialized in antique reproductions and developed new chemical processes to colour and patinate bronzes. As a good representative of the romantic generation, Ferdinand Barbedienne’s mission is to democratize art, making numerous copies of antiques and stimulating the dissemination of the works of his contemporaries. Many famous sculptures are published by the Barbedienne foundry. Throughout his life, Barbedienne collaborated with artists like Édouard Lièvre, Ferdinand Levillain, Attarge, Aizelin, Barye ou Fremiet.
