Magnificent cracked earthenware sculpture, depicting a very beautiful smiling ephebe.
The beauty of the face of this young man is represented in the purest Art Deco style, underlined even more by the treatment of the hair very in accordance with this period.
This very beautiful piece is signed on the back F. Trinque.
Trinque was a French sculptor who was primarily active in the 1920-30s. If Trinque is relatively unknown, he is today an artist very appreciated by collectors, mainly because of his great know-how and his style, clearly influenced by Art Deco.
Woman and original beauty are his main themes. Regardless of the medium, ceramic, bronze or even terracotta, what is striking with Trinque is that his women often do not conform to the common ideal of beauty, which gives his sculptures strength and individuality.

Crackle is a network of irregular meshes formed by the upper enamel of a porcelain. These irregular cracks initially resulting from a manufacturing defect were quickly used voluntarily as a technique of decoration for the type of porcelain known as "crackle".
In ceramic or enamel, when the support and the vitrified composition which covers it do not cool in identical proportions, a different shrinkage occurs, causing cracks.
Some metals in enameling are difficult to use because their shrinkage is too different from the enamel it contains. The change in temperature must operate in the same expansion and contraction modifications on the substance to be enameled and on the enamel itself.
The cooling must also be simultaneous. If, for example, a current of cold air is projected onto a part when it comes out of the oven, the enamel which receives the cold first, cools faster than the ceramic paste it covers and the withdrawal causes cracks.
The most famous and esteemed of crackles come from China (12th century Guan type sandstone) and Japan, where artisans have been able to obtain mixtures of various crackles on the same vase. Sometimes, in the slits thus formed, they insert an enamel of another color which partitions the first.
