Henri Cros
Henri Cros pioneered a technique known as pate-de-verre, whereby variously colored glasses are placed in a clay mould and kiln-fired to form a vitreous material, by using the acid of metal oxides. Many of Cros’ moulds are preserved today at the Musée National de Céramique, Sèvres, as it was the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres who had provided Cros a pension and a studio to pursue his research and create his work. His tour de force in this genre is the enormous Apotheosis of Victor Hugo housed in the Maison de Victor Hugo, Paris. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York also has a fine collection of his work. In addition to his importance to glass-making, Cros was a notable painter and sculptor. He trained at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris under the sculptors, François Jouffroy and Antoine Étex and the painter, Jules Valadon. After his Salon debut in Paris in 1861, Cros joined fellow avant-garde artists to show at the anti-establishment Salon des refuses of 1863. He was awarded several medals for his artistic work at l’Exposition Universelle in 1889 and1900 in Paris and was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. In 1905, A.A. Hebrard opened a gallery located at 8 rue Royale in Paris, where they presented sculpture by artists whose work they produced at their foundry. A vestige of the gallery’s ticket, still affixed to the back of the plaque, helps pinpoint that this piece was made just shortly before the artist’s death in 1907. Today, many examples of earthenware fountains and sculpture by Cros can be found in national museums throughout France and private collections.

- Art Nouveau Pearl Mermaid Porcelain Plaque by Emile JacobBy Emile JacobLocated in Chicago, USWith artful and sensuous handling of material, Emile Jacob demonstrates his life-long love of learning with a technical mastery of porcelain and glazes as well as an awareness of current artistic trends such as Japonisme and l’Art Nouveau. From a bird’s-eye view perspective popularized by Japanese wood block prints circulating in Europe, Jacob immediately confronts the viewer with the sea. The variegated blues and greens take on every murky depth, every iridescence produced on a sun-filled water’s surface; while the suggestion of movement created by undulating patterns of water morphs into sand ridges caused by breaking waves as the viewer nears for a closer examination. The effect is remarkable. Upon closer scrutiny, the abstracted ridges create an affect of being even farther away from the sea, as if high in flight. The same captivating qualities are achieved by the opaque and crystalline glazes to suggest the interior of an oyster’s shell. The ultimate pearl, a female nude, is voluptuously modeled; fusing as one with her seascape, her hair spreads out in wavy tendrils and her graceful, long fingers wrap around the plaque’s edge. - Symbolist CatBy ZsolnayLocated in Chicago, US"It is easy to understand why the rabble dislike cats. A cat is beautiful; it suggests ideas of luxury, cleanliness, and voluptuous pleasures." - Charles Baudelaire Iridescence, which changes in every angle of reflected light, is the perfect complement to a cat’s capricious nature. Zsolnay introduced its patented shiny metallic glaze, known as eosin, in 1893. The small family ceramics workshop begun in Pecs, Hungary by Miklos Zsolnay in 1853 had evolved into a world-class ceramics factory by this time. Zsolnay walked away with the Grand Prix at the 1878 World’s Fair in Paris for its art pottery. Under the stewardship of Vilmos Zsolnay...Category
