Karl Hagenauer Pair of Art Deco Bronze & Wood Musicians

About the Item

Karl Hagenauer’s Pair of Art Deco Bronze & Wood Musicians showcases his mastery in the Art Deco style. As an influential Austrian designer and goldsmith, Karl Hagenauer followed in the footsteps of his father, Carl Hagenauer, who established Hagenauer Wien in 1898. Karl, who would later lead the family business, began his artistic journey at the Vienna School of Applied Arts at just eleven years old. These sculptures beautifully capture the essence of music’s emotive power through the dynamic pose of the violinist. Karl Hagenauer’s avant-garde vision is evident in the combination of materials used. The gold violins adds a touch of opulence, while the wood infuses warmth and organic charm. Hagenauer’s craftsmanship and art stands as a captivating ode to the creativity and dynamism of the Roaring Twenties. Each finely detailed note echoes the spirit of the era, showcasing Hagenauer’s enduring influence in the world of Art Deco. Its marked authenticity with WHW and the atelier’s signature further cements its provenance, making it a remarkable piece from the golden age of Austrian design.

  • Popeye Sailor European Sculpture Ebony and Metal Art Deco Hagenauer
    By Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien
    Located in Oakland, CA
Popeye the Sailor, a European Sculpture in the style of Hagenauer made of Ebony wood and Metal in the Art Deco style. We have had a few pieces in this treatment, style and materials. They are very rare to find. This one is particularly interesting since it is an homage to the character of Popeye. This sculpture has a slightly cubist feeling with the treatment of black ebony and silver including the navy anchor on its arm obviously inspired by the original Popeye. It’s not a widely known fact that a real person inspired E.C. Segar, the creator of Popeye. We have discovered was fashioned to resemble this man Frank “Rocky” Fiegel, whose parents immigrated from Poland to the United States. Rocky was born in 1868-1947 and as an adult he joined the navy. He was considered very strong and smoked a pipe, all characteristics of the cartoon Popeye which became such an important icon of protection, not allowing bullying or to be bulled. This Popeye Sailor sculpture...
