'Stoneware Sculpture of a Man' by Albert Thiry (circa 1990s)

About the Item

Vintage French earthenware sculpture of a man, by Albert Thiry (circa 1990s). Not one of his usual subjects, ceramicist Thiry created this figure wearing the garb and cap of a medieval monk, his hands placidly held at the waist. On the robe is an alternating mix of flower and square motifs. A stunning ceramic artwork of significant size (18.9" tall / 48 cm) which could easily be displayed as the centrepiece of the room. The maker's signature appears on the interior void of the piece. It is in overall good condition. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request a video will be provided. About the Artist: Albert Thiry (1932-2009) was born in Nice, France. His family moved to Vallauris where he spent most of the school holidays in the potteries; in 1956 he was taken on as an assistant decorator with an opportunity to make his own pieces. Albert and his wife, Pyot, set up their own pottery in 1961. Their standard production, in Vallauris clay with added grog to emphasise rusticity, resulted in delightful pieces both highly elaborate and utilitarian. Dimensions: H 48 cm / 18.9" W 21 cm / 8.3" D 18 cm / 7.1"
