Very Large San Marino Bottle Vase Smalto Roccia Glaze Italy 1950s
About the Item
An unusually large example of San Marino tourist pottery with 'Smalto Roccia' or 'Lava' glaze. The brightly colored blue panel illustrates a Mediterranean rock pool, including a jellyfish and various colorful fish swimming about amid swaying sea grass.
This vase (see a matching boat shaped vase listed on our storefront) was purchased during the 1950s on the Island of Sicily during a family holiday. It was brought back to Melbourne where it remained on the same shelf, carefully dusted weekly, to the present day. In near perfect condition.
These San Marino slip moulded bisque clay tourist items are fragile and rarely found in such good condition.
Given the overall wildly textured surface, it would be easy to mistake the overlapping glaze colors for chips. There is no damage to this vase. There are the usual production faults as with all San Marino - a popped glaze bubble here and there, stripes of background wash show through the top glaze. We've been very careful to show these typical production products in closeup, with a match head for scale.
In particular, there are two white glaze drips to the lip of the vase. These are not chips or losses. They are simply contrasting background colors.
Mark Hill, in his comprehensive text on Italian Ceramics, 'Alla Moda: Italian Ceramics of the 1950s-70s’, notes that few of these vases are signed. This one is not signed.
He also notes of the larger bottle vases by San Marino that, '...their large sizes, [and] the quality of the decoration is comparatively very high. Both factors make them extremely rare today' (p.173, Alla Moda, Mark Hill, 2012).
The carefree, playful nature of these ceramics is very appealing to those who love a bold, colorful, high-kitsch Mid Century aesthetic. Just a delight!

- Monumental Signed Shunichi Inoue White and Rose Ash Glazed Vase 1978By Shunichi InoueLocated in Melbourne, AUA wonderful example of the work of master Japanese potter, Shunichi Inoue. This vessel dates from his Australian residency. We love the potency of this very simple form - it has a powerful presence, connoting stillness, composure. For some reason it makes me think of the moon. It has the same still, calm, abiding presence. Shunichi Inoue studied ceramics at Kyoto City University of Arts 1969-75. He travelled to Australia to lecturer in ceramics at the Bendigo College of Advanced Education in Victoria, Australia where he stayed for three years. He returned to Australia in late 1984 as a visiting professor and again in 1993, when he made an extended stay. He was an active exhibitor and had an important influence on Australian pottery...Category
