19th Century French Majolica Cache Pot with Poppies Decor

About the Item

A very colourful 19th century Majolica cache pot, vividly decorated with an entrancing motif of flowering poppies and foliage, and set against a yellow background imprinted with an intricate basketweave texture. Majolica earthenware is noted for its brilliant colouration and high-relief sculpture, and this gorgeous planter is a perfect example of both. Historically, a cache pot such as this would have been used to cycle the display of plants indoors and outside throughout the year, allowing them to be grown in their weathered, utilitarian pots when outdoors, but still displayed most elegantly when brought in to the house. Large enough to contain a good-sized houseplant, or as a decorative feature in its own right, this eye-catching piece of ceramic art would be an ideal gift for a collector of Majolica pottery.
