Antique 19th Century Italian Grand Tour Siena Marble Model of a Sarcophagus

About the Item

A Magnificent Antique 19th Century Italian Grand Tour Siena Marble Model of a Sarcophagus on a Rouge Marble Base. This piece is modeled in the manner of Benedetto Boschetti, featuring a Siena marble basin atop a rouge marble base. The Siena marble is shaped like an elongated bowl with dense lion’s feet attaching it to the rouge marble. On the facade of the basin is a small lion’s head, accompanied by two relief handles on either side. Ancient Egypt and Rome saw the use of sarcophagi as ritual baths. Shaped to fit an entire human body, sarcophagi make a spiritually symbolic space for death and rebirth. Benedetto Boschetti was a prominent 19th-century Italian sculptor working primarily in bronze and marble. His work is ornate, focusing on reviving classical Roman artistic techniques. Known for his neoclassical figurative and furnishing sculpture, this marble sarcophagus is an excellent example of Italian Grand tour sensibility. Italy, Circa: 1840
