Danish Modern Blue, Lilac Tiered Ceramic Vase, Kähler, 1960s
About the Item
Handmade Danish Mid-Century Modern tiered ceramic vase by British ceramic artist Carl Cunningham-Cole for acclaimed Danish ceramic manufacturer Kähler. Warm beige colored glaze on top with cobalt blue glaze on the bottom and lilac, dark purple and brown on middle part. Manufactured in the town of Naestved on Southern Zealand in the 1960s. Signed on bottom with original production sticker. Great vintage condition.
In 1839, German-born Herman J. Kähler opened a small pottery workshop in the town of Næstved on Southern Zealand in Denmark. When his sons Herman August and Carl Frederik take over production in 1875, things start to take off for the small business that would soon grow to become one of the largest Danish successes within the history of artistic pottery. Herman August Kähler participated in exhibitions around the world, creating interest with both retailers and museums. In 1917, his son Herman H.C. Kähler takes over the business and with him the brand returns to a more traditional pottery style inspired by Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movement with a touch of nordic Romanticism. In 1940, Nils and Herman Kähler take over from their father and they will become the last generation to shape the Kähler business. With Nils as the primary and passionate designer, the business flourishes and even after the family sell the business in 1974, the Kähler brand is still appreciated as one of Denmark's greatest ceramic successes.
