Japanese bronze vase decorated with Kintaro riding Carp Koi - Meiji - 19th Japan
About the Item
Very pretty Japanese Meiji bronze vase representing a naked boy, like a cherub, very muscular on a Koi carp in the middle of crashing waves.
The bronze work is very beautiful, the motif of the child and the fish stands out in relief.
The two handles of the vase are also in sculpted bronze.
Beautiful patina.
This vase, due to its decoration, is a symbol of perseverance, bravery and courage.
The child, depicted riding the carp, is Kintarō: He is a legendary figure in Japanese folklore. He is often described as a boy with superhuman strength and great intelligence. From a young age, Kintarō showed extraordinary abilities. He was able to lift huge rocks and fight against wild animals.
Kintarō has become a popular hero in Japanese culture, representing strength, bravery and loyalty. His legend has inspired numerous works of art.
Kintarō dolls are displayed on Boys' Day, "Tango no Sekku" in the hope of seeing boys become as courageous and strong as Kintarō, like on this vase where he is represented with a carp, also a symbol of courage , perseverance and success.
Indeed, carp represent strength and perseverance, because they go against the current of the rivers and waterfalls of Japan and Asia. According to an Asian legend, the carp of the Yellow River, after having gone up the river, fly towards the sky transforming into dragons with golden scales.
