Japanese Contemporary Red Blue Porcelain Vase by Master Artist, 4

About the Item

Unique Japanese contemporary decorative porcelain vase, hand-painted in blue underglaze and red on a beautifully shaped porcelain body in pure white, a signed piece by widely celebrated award-winning master porcelain artist of the historic Imari-Arita region of Japan. Besides being a master in underglaze hand-painting and polychrome enamel, the artist is admired for his signature techniques in application of gold and platinum to porcelain painting. In 2016, the British Museum added a work by this artist to its collection of contemporary Japanese porcelain, a large lidded jar in the Imari-Arita polychrome enamel tradition. His profile is available upon request. The vase is the perfect canvas to showcase graceful cranes symbolizing longevity, one of the most revered auspicious motifs in traditional Japanese art, set against attractive clouds in red. It creates a stunning contrast that invites the viewer to approach the piece to explore its details. "Fired-on gold," his signature style highlights unique techniques for incorporating gold and platinum in the hand painting and multiple firing processes to create a stunningly opulent look. After firing the blue underglaze at 1,300 degrees Celsius, the polychrome overglaze is fired at 800 degrees. Finally, gold or platinum is applied and fired at slightly lower temperatures to maximize the luster of the precious metals. To achieve a crisp separation of colors and materials, a single piece may undergo as many as ten firings. This exquisite porcelain vase comes in a custom-made wooden case signed by the artist.
