pyrity stoneware vase by Robert Deblander
About the Item
Robert Deblander (Paris 20th, January 22, 1924 - Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire1, May 6, 2010) was a French ceramist and potter, one of the leaders of the post-war stoneware renaissance.
He worked in earthenware from 1949 to 1957, then switched to stoneware2.
He settled in Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye in 1962 and has worked there ever since2.
Until 1975, his vessels were sculptural, with the material emphasized through the use of clay with pyrites added and colored by firing in a wood-fired kiln. The years from 1975 to 1990 are those of monochrome glazed porcelain vases, with pure lines and matte or satin glazes. A fourth period, up to the early 2000s, saw the surfaces of his pieces come alive with free-form graphics2.
In recent years, he has devoted himself to research inspired by "chawan", Japanese bowls used in tea ceremonies3.
