Shearwater Carved Pottery Vase
About the Item
This beautiful vase was made by renowned Shearwater Pottery of Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Shearwater was founded in 1928 by Peter Anderson and went on to establish a reputation for creating innovative and unique art pottery. The pottery was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 with the majority of its buildings severely damaged and several pieces destroyed by flood waters, including many older items held in the Anderson family's collections which dated to Shearwater's early years.
This rare early Shearwater vase was thrown by the pottery's founder Peter Anderson in 1948 and was carved by Peter's younger brother, James McConnell (Mac) Anderson. The piece has an Arts and Crafts aesthetic with a lobed body and ribbed neck. The exterior of the vase is finished in Shearwater's Antique Green glaze which has a mottled effect with kelly green hues visible beneath a darker olive color. The underside bears the Shearwater name with Mac Anderson's mark and the date 1948.
This Shearwater vase displays beautifully and would be a Fine addition to a collection of American art pottery. A lovely piece.
