Very old Japanese hard earthenware/[Sueki] Jar/10th to 11th century

About the Item

I would like to introduce a very uniquely shaped Japanese antique pottery. This is an ancient Japanese pottery called Sueki. It started being made in the Sue village of Osaka and came to be called sueki. (ki=meaning of vessel) Throughout Japanese history, soft unglazed earthenware was fired at low temperatures, but around the 4th century, with the development of kiln technology, it began to be fired at high temperatures. Fired at high temperatures, the pottery becomes harder and less likely to break. The color is light gray pottery. This is a technique introduced from the Korean Peninsula. Sueki, which was born in Osaka, gradually began to be made in various parts of Japan. This was made around the 10th or 11th century. Originally, it was a symmetrical jar with a trumpet-shaped upper part and a turnip-shaped lower part. It is a design representative of this era and has a very beautiful shape. However, when this vase was being fired in the kiln, it collapsed due to heat or other reasons, resulting in its current shape. The intricate design makes it attractive from any angle. Also, even though it is crushed, it has vitality and strength. You can place it on the table or hang it on the wall. Also, there was no leakage even when I filled it with about 1/3 of the water. The part marked with a red round mark is where it was once cracked and has been repaired. However, I don't think it will have much of an impact on viewing. The overall appearance appears to be covered with a green glaze, but this is a natural glaze created by burning and melting the straw in the kiln. it's very beautiful. Such pots are quite difficult to obtain. In fact, there are many pews that are in good shape. For the people who were making this product at the time, this crushed shape was considered a defective product and had no value. Therefore, it is thought that they tried to avoid producing defective products as much as possible. For this reason, crushed Jars like this are now rare and highly valued in Japan. This time I was able to obtain it from a collector I know, so I am posting it on 1stdibs. It comes in its own storage box. The lid of the storage box says "Ancient Urn."
