Vintage Bauhaus 'Spritzdekor' Airbrushed Ceramic Vase, Germany 1940s

About the Item

For sale is a German Modernist, Bauhaus style ‘Spritzdekor’ (or airbrush) ceramic vase with a geometric design, dating from circa the 1940s. The vase, which has no manufacturer's mark, is in excellent vintage condition, with wear commensurate with 60+ years of general wear and has no chips, cracks or fleabites. The form number, '3232' is blind stamped into the base, together with the ink stamped decoration number '7670'. Spritzdekor geometric designs and patterns featured bold, bright, brash, lines, steps, circles, squares and dots and were widely circulated and hugely popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Designs were often inspired by trending art movements of the previous decade such as Suprematism, founded by Kasimir Malevich, a Russian painter but would also have been inspired by other Soviet Era artists such as Alexander Rodchenko, and from the Bauhaus in Weimar and then Dessau where Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy were active teachers and artists. Paintings and textiles by Sonia Delaunay from Paris also served as inspiration, as did the works of many other artists.
