Georgian Wine Drinking Glass Hand Blown Thistle Bowl Cotton Twist Stem, Ca 1755
About the Item
This is a superb hand-blown example of an English, mid-Georgian, wine or cordial drinking glass with a rare thistle bowl, thick double series opaque twist (DSOT) stem and wide folded foot, dating from the middle of the 18th century, circa 1755.
These glasses are very collectable. It is made from English lead glass which is relatively heavy and has a soft grey colour, with slight age related wear as expected with over 200 years of use.
The glass has the usual striations, inclusions and tiny bubbles you would expect to see in 18th Century glass, which gives these glasses their unique charm.
This glass has a very rare thistle shaped bowl which sits on a thick, double series opaque or cotton twist stem consisting of a pair of multi-ply spiral bands wound outside a single thread (DSOT). The stem leads to a good and very wide diameter conical foot with a fold-over rim having a rough snapped off pontil mark to the underside. There are no chips, cracks or any evidence of restoration.
The relatively small volume bowl points to this being a cordial glass.
