Copelands Porcelain Coffee Can Hand Painted and with T Goode of London Mark

About the Item

This is a very beautiful English coffee can, all hand painted and gilded, made by Copelands China and with a distinctive retailers mark of Thomas Goode & Co, Mayfair, London which we date to the mid-19th century, circa 1850s. This coffee can is well potted, nominally straight sided with a plain loop handle having fairly pointed attachments. The coffee can is finely hand painted in a distinctive continuous floral Peony trailing vine pattern all in various shade of a burnt orange color and embellished with many leaves in gold gilt. There is also a double gold ring above the base rim with a gold rim and further gold to the outer handle. The pattern is chinoiserie in style, probably inspired by an earlier Chinese pattern. The piece is clearly identified on the base with a printed, under-glaze Copelands China mark in blue together with a light green printed Retailers mark of T Goode & Co, London with a crown above. There is also a painter’s mark by the base rim. Overall a very beautiful and decorative English coffee can in remarkable condition. Thomas Goode & Co. First established in 1827, Thomas Goode & Co. is a china, silverware and glass retailer at 19 South Audley Street in Mayfair, London. It holds two royal warrants to supply the British royal household, one from Queen Elizabeth II and the other from the Prince of Wales. Thomas Goode & Co. have occupied 19 South Audley Street since 1845 and first opened their doors to Mayfair’s retail customers back in 1875. Designed by Ernest George, 19 South Audley Street was transformed into London’s foremost tableware emporium by Thomas Goode’s son, the enterprising William Goode, who travelled the world not just in search of the finest porcelain and bone china designs, but also providing a uniquely personal service to Europe’s great families; in the process endowing the business with a caliber of clientèle that still endures to this day.
