Hand-Painted Strawberry Basket Majolica, George Jones 19th Century

About the Item

Geroge Jones Majolica Strawberry basket, Pattern Number 3300, bearing the hallmark of an impressed Crescent and Initials, originating from circa 1880. This basket has four compartments: two larger ones for strawberries and two smaller ones for accompaniments like cream and sugar. Made by George Jones in England in the late 19th century, it features a vibrant palette of brown, green, and turquoise hues, with a design that intricately weaves together leaves and flowers of the strawberry plant, complemented by white and yellow accents. The basket is adorned with molded tree branch edges, and a large carry handle, and rests on four feet resembling twisted branches. The interior tray has a textured surface with molded strawberry flowers and leaves in classic George Jones turquoise. The handle seamlessly merges with the basket's feet, mimicking intertwining branches. Renowned for its quality and craftsmanship, George Jones' majolica competes with the finest creations of Minton and Wedgwood. Notably, George Jones earned acclaim at prestigious exhibitions in Paris (1867), London (1871), Vienna (1873), and Sydney (1876). With its delightful silhouette and captivating colors, this English strawberry basket by George Jones, promises to be a striking decorative accent in any home, particularly enhancing a dining room or kitchen ambiance. Marked with an English registration diamond underneath, the 'F' symbolizes the production year, while the 'H' represents April. Impressed with a diamond registration mark for 1873 and painted model number 3300, this design is referenced in figure 70, page 51, of "George Jones Ceramics 1861-1951" by Robert Cluett. Its condition is perfect; with minor wear to the glaze noted on some raised decorations, mainly along the central ridge in the basket. Perfect for display and still functional as a server.
