We always prefer to be on the most conservative side with dating and this remains the case.
Quite how anyone with any credibility can date a late 17th or early 18th century glass to within five years suspends belief.
Fashion is always in a state of flux. Josephine Baker was wearing mini skirts in the 1930s and yet we associate them with them with the 1960s. But how about Vivienne Westwood and the mini skirt of the late 1970s. That equates to a fifty year spread on "contemporary" items. This is not an isolated example. Wherever antiques may be exhibited be that on line or in a museum showcase there will always be be doubt, primarily with the former.
