Magnum Decanter, England C1790 with Later Etched Masonic Decoration
About the Item
A magnum decanter, made plain in Georgian times. Later etched for brandy, and decorated with Masonic symbols, in imitation of early wheel-cut engraving.
The engraving includes the name of E Woods, Burslem, one of the famous potters of that period; and the year 1780. The decoration is no doubt intended to deceive. If it were original the decanter would be worth a small fortune; but as it is, it's an amusing and useful fake that can be used to impress your guests - or perhaps to test their knowledge.
I suspect the design has been created from scratch, I've not been able to find another example, either real or fake, from which it might have been copied.
A large and impressive piece.
