Hand Blown Antique Glass Wedding Bell Made England, Circa 1840
About the Item
This beautiful handmade blown glass wedding bell was made in England at the Nailsea Glassworks circa 1840.
It has exquisite deep blue coloring with a crisp line of white glass wrapped around it (see images #2 and #5). The white glass line spirals up from the bottom edge into the handle.
The exceptional blue and white opaque twist inside the handle was created with threads of blue and white glass pulled up and twisted in the interior of the handle as the glass was blown (see images #3 and #6).
The glass bell has its original glass clapper, which is quite rare (see image #4).

Background of glass wedding bells: The ringing of wedding bells is a tradition that traces back to Scotland. Bells were first rung in the churches of Scotland to announce newlyweds. The ringing bells spread the marriage news long distances, so bells after a wedding let the whole area know that the couple was now happily married. British glass bells were made to celebrate and commemorate weddings.
Background of Nailsea Glass:
In 1788, John Robert Lucas built glassworks at Nailsea. He picked Nailsea because of the plentiful coal supply for the factory's furnaces from local mines in the Nailsea Basin.
