Mid-Century Ceramic Pitcher by Albert Thiry 'circa 1970s'
About the Item
Large mid-century ceramic pitcher (circa 1970s) by Albert Thiry. A classic Thiry design and decoration scheme, this pitcher's base colour is done in a milky-white glaze with painted blue thistle flowers along with their green leaves. It is elegant and rustic all at once and very Provençal. It would make for a lovely centre piece filled with flowers. In good overall condition. Signed: 'Thiry' on base underside of piece. This gallery finds that Thiry's works are more and more in demand in overdue recognition of his artistic creativity. Upon request a video of this piece will be provided.
About the Artist: Albert Thiry (1932-2009) was born in Nice, France. His family moved to Vallauris where he spent most of the school holidays in the potteries; in 1956 he was taken on as an assistant decorator with an opportunity to make his own pieces. Albert and his wife, Pyot, set up their own pottery in 1961. Their standard production, in Vallauris clay with added grog to emphasise rusticity, resulted in delightful pieces both highly elaborate and utilitarian.
