Landing of General Lafayette Staffordshire Platter by James and Ralph Clews circa 1830. This deep blue Staffordshire platter is made of white earthenware with a blue transfer. It was made by brothers James and Ralph Clews. The platter has a scene of the landing of General Lafayette at Castle Garden, New York on August 16 1824, commemorating the Revolutionary War hero's American tour. It has a wide rim decorated with flowers which was one of Clews' most frequently used boarders. It is stamped with James and Ralph Clews' crown stamp "Clews Warranted Staffordshire."
Castle Garden is Castle Clinton or Fort Clinton which stands in Battery Park, in Manhattan, New York City.
