Sarreguemines Majolica Trompe L’Oeil Greek Key Napkin Egg Box Pâté Terrine

About the Item

From the Sarreguemines Majolica Napkin line, a trompe l’oeil egg box or Pâté Terrine, France, circa 1885- 1890. An earthenware, faïence lidded egg box modeled as fresh eggs wrapped in a cloth napkin with a floral and checkered pattern and a Greek key border. An egg forms the top knob, another egg peaks out from one corner. Cleverly done – loosely square shaped, furthering the tromp l’oeil effect. Clear glazing on a cream colored clay ground with a hand painted sepia glaze to the key pattern. The last two photos shows the tureen sitting on a corresponding bread tray – offered separately. Marked: Sarreguemines Majolica, the mold number 1447 Measures: 8.5 in. L x 8 in. W x 5 in. H In very good antique condition – a nice clean piece.
