Large Gilded Loving Cup Attributed to Coalport
About the Item
This large, superbly gilded loving cup, carries on one side, the inscription "Presented by A Friend With Kind regards" and on the other a small four line poem, "When this you see remember me, And bear me in your mind, Let all the world say what they will, Speak of me as you find". Both of these texts are surrounded by elaborate and beautifully executed gilding. The cup stands 138 mm (5.5 inches) high and has a diameter at the top of 136 mm (5.5 inches). The distance from handle to handle is 230 mm (9 inches). There is some slight loss of the gilding, mainly to the handles, and a little crazing around the footrim. Attributed to Coalport, it dates to around 1850.
